The number of times i have come out of the swimming pool and a random person asks, quite unwittingly, “Do you have any shampoo i can borrow?”
Mind you, i have been known to say some STUPID things in my time 🙂
Since changing from synthetic to Human hair wigs i searched through trial and error to find a good shampoo and conditioner… There is NO COMPARISON to KERASTASE. In my home town of Berwick Upon Twed in the North East of England i am very fortunate to have a hairdresser who specialises in cutting and styling wigs. Many of his clients have Cancer or also Alopecia, his name is Darren.
Darren is from Newcastle but comes up to Berwick once a week for his Northern clients to a salon called TRIBECA.
Darren was the person who recommended Kerastase to me.
The wig i have is a Trendco wig, the hair is Remi hair, which means it has been put through a process. The hair has been stripped of colour and then re- dyed to an all over colour. This then makes the hair shafts more porous.
When i first got my wig it was so soft and smooth, like the strands had been coated in some laquer of some sort. After washing it a few times it became Dull, and lifeless and somehow thicker and heavier….. What happens is the strands of hair ,since they have been processed seem to absorb the product you use on them much more readily, and before you know it there is a build up.
KERASTASE Oleo-relax slim is THE BEST. (and i am not marketing, just there is no other product which compares on the market and this saves you time and money looking :))
It smoothes the hair shaft and leaves it beautifully soft and shiny. It is perfect for wigs that are a tad unruly and have a slight natural kink or wave in them.
HOWEVER…… you can still mess up using this product! Trust me when i say it is all about technique, i have used Kerastase before and the wig can dry thick and heavy, that is purely beacuse i have been in a hurry and not done it properly and left product in the hair. So here is step by step instructions.
STEP 1 (Brush)
Make sure the hair is brushed and there are NO KNOTS in it. When brushing the hair always start at the ends getting out any small knots before working up to the roots. (preferably use a wide tooth comb, however i like to use a wide paddle brush with flexi plastic bristles. As long as you are careful and gentle with the hair) Hold the hair in one hand whilst you brush the ends so no strain is put on the knotting so the hairs remain intact longer. You can do this on your head or on a block. Remember to brush the underneath too.
Here is my Trendco wig all brushed out ready for washing. You can see it has a slight wave to it and looks rather thick and unruly! It needs pampering, BADLY 🙂
STEP 2 (Shampoo)
Submerge the wig in luke warm water until completely saturated….. or you can hold it under the shower Always make sure when you lift the hair out of the water that you keep the strands going in the right direction. Lift the cap out first, keeping the hair in it’s parting.
Wash the wig using Kerastase Oleo- Relax. Use about a 20p drop in the palm of your hand. I always start at the top of the wig and work my way down the hair shafts, try not to rub the hair strands harshly. Gently massage downward starting at the foundation down the length of the wig to the tips. Make sure the hair doesn’t get tangled…..ie dont go in guns a blazing and massage into a big mess, knotting the hair up and only achieving a massive soapy hair ball!!!
RINSE SHAMPOO THOROUGHLY in warm water, until the water runs clear, and the wig feels SQUEEKY CLEAN….. repeat.
THE SECRET IS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE PRODUCT IS RINSED OUT, IF LEFT IN THE WIG WILL DRY GREASY AND HEAVY
Step 3 (Condition)
To condition i squeeze out some water from the wig so it is not dripping and apply a small amount of Oleo-Relax Slim Conditioner to the lengths. I do not apply to the roots, only from about 3in from the roots and right to the tips. The amount depends on the length of the wig. Leave the conditioner in for 5 min or so and then rinse under running luke warm water, until water runs clear. Again, make sure ALL CONDITIONER has been rinsed out properly. You should not feel a residue on your hands after sqeezing the wig. I finish with a blast of cold water.
Step 4 (Drying)
Squeeze excess water out with your hand from root to tip. Wrap in a clean towel to further pat dry. Be careful not to PULL fibers as hair can stretch when wet. I then place the towel dried wig on the wig block and leave to dry naturally before styling. Leaving a wig to dry naturally always gives the best results. Put a towel beneath to catch any drips 🙂
NEVER BRUSH A WIG WHEN IT IS WET SINCE THE HAIR CAN STRETCH AND IT WILL UPSET THE KNOTTING AT THE FOUNDATION OF THE WIG.
My hairdresser introduced me to Kerastase Pixielist. Which is an intesive treatment for coloured hair. I was amazed too at the results achieved when i used this product. After conditioning and rinsing leave the wig submerged in luke warm water with half a bottle of Pixielist for 30 min, rinse the hair and dry as described above. The results are fantastic, smooth , weightless, shiny hair!!! I use this on my wigs once a month for extra care, it does not need to be used all the time.
The secret is to wash the hair properly and DO NOT leave any product in the hair. RINSE thoroughly and dry naturally!
Below is the washed wig left to dry naturally, as you can see the wig is lying a lot flatter and feels soft and smooth.
And after being straightened…
Good luck and thanks for reading !
